Cats are masters of disguise. In the wild, showing weakness invites danger, so your pampered house cat still hides pain until it's serious. The trick is learning their whispers before they become emergencies.

1. The litter box boycott

A cat who suddenly avoids a clean litter box isn't being naughty — it's the most common first sign of urinary trouble, especially in male cats. Straining to urinate is an emergency.

2. Hiding more than usual

Every cat has a favourite hideout. But a social cat who vanishes for days, or a friendly greeter who stops meeting you at the door, is asking for a check-up.

3. Changes at the food bowl

Eating dramatically more or less, dropping food, or chewing on one side can point to thyroid issues, dental pain, or nausea. Weight change you can feel along the spine matters too.

4. Over-grooming or a dull coat

Bald patches from licking often mean stress, allergies, or skin pain. A greasy, unkempt coat in a previously tidy cat can signal arthritis or illness — grooming hurts when joints ache.

5–7. The quiet trio

New vocalising at night (often thyroid or blood pressure in seniors), sleeping in odd positions like the 'loaf of pain', and sudden grumpiness when touched all deserve attention. You know your cat's normal better than anyone — trust your gut when normal changes.

If any of these sound familiar, book a consultation. Caught early, most feline conditions are remarkably manageable.
